Underwater Post Office in Risor, Norway

Commemorative issued February 21, 2023 to celebrate the
300th anniversary of Risor showing the town's waterfront.

Thor Walther Eriksen of the scuba diving club in Risor, Norway suggested establishing an underwater branch office for his local post office. Risor, a town on the Baltic coast in the southeast, had its 300th anniversary celebrated on a stamp issued on February 21, 2023. Its underwater post office opened in 2004 and was located at a depth of four metres in a diving bell next to a pier that provided a dry underwater chamber for cancelling mail. During the warmer tourist season, visitors mailed their letters or postcards in a nearby postbox. Until the mailbox was removed from service in 2018, mail was sealed in a watertight bag and delivered to the underwater post office where it was cancelled before being returned to the surface for sorting and normal delivery in the postal system.
