Slovenia Salt Stamp
Slovenia issued these novel "Marine Life" stamps applying actual salt to the surface of the stamps in the printing process.

Most of the stamps featured on the "Salty Stamps" website include images relevant to the production or use of salt. Slovenia's "Marine Life" issue of September 27, 2013, included here, is exceptional. These stamps feature fish rather than any thing directly related to salt but they are relevant to this site because they were printed using a very special thermography technique in which part of the design was covered with real salt from the Piranske Soline saltworks. In the right light, the texture can be seen on the fish.

The marine creatures depicted on the stamps are the Damselfish (Chromis chromis), the Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) and the golden grey mullet (Liza aurata). It deserves special note on this site because, of all mullet species, the golden grey mullet has the highest tolerance for salt water.

The Piran saltpans are situated in a national park and nature preserve of southern Piran, on Slovenia's Adriatic coast. They are among the longest-functioning artisanal saltpans in Europe, providing salt for over seven hundred years. The salt-rich waters of the northern Adriatic enter the interconnected series of shallow, lagoon-like basins that form the saltpans where the water evaporates leaving the crystals of salt flowers to be hand-harvested. Their sweet flavor is the result of high mineral content and low levels of bitter sodium chloride.
