Korea (North) Salt Stamp
This stamp described in the Scott Standard Catalogue as depicting "Salt Making" is one of eleven stamps in an "Economic
Development" issue of September 20, 1959. The inscription actually reads "1.5 to 2 million tonnes of chemical fertilizer."

North Korea is striving to become self-sufficient in salt production by using processes of evaporation of salt water from underground sources and seawater. Efforts to modernize production have been impeded by poor infrastructure. Potash, the source of the chemical fertilizer mentioned on the stamp above, is an impure combination of potassium carbonate and potassium salt. The fertilizer forms of potassium are derived by separating the salt and other minerals.
