Teguidda-n-Tessoumt, located on an ancient lake bed 15 kilometres from In-Gall, experiences annual floods producing natural salt ponds. Approximately fifty families migrate from In-Gall to work the "salt factory." Salty water fills muddy ponds. Once the sediment settles, the salt water is drained and filtered, and, after evaporation, salt crystals are harvested. Labourers from the local clans transport the salt back to In-Gall at the end of the season. Until they were replaced by road transportation, Azalai salt caravans were used by Tuareg merchants to transport salt from the Ingall's markets across the Sahel for agricultural and medicinal uses.
