In 2020, the Netherlands produced 5 712 038 metric tons of salt. According to the inscription on the selvage of the Industrial Heritage miniature sheet depicted above, "Al in 1886 werd in Nederlandse bodem zout gevonden, maar pas in 1918 ging men over tot de winning ervan. De zoutboortoren in Boekelo was de eerste. Na de aanleg van het Twentekanaal werd Hengelo de belangrijkste zoutstad. or, in English, "Salt was found in Dutch soil as early as 1886, but it was not until 1918 that it was extracted. The salt derrick in Boekelo was the first. After the construction of the Twente Canal, Hengelo became the most important salt city."
