Macau Salt Stamp
Souvenir sheet issued April 12, 2018 from the "Mainland
China Scenery" series depicting the Mangkang salt ponds.

Primitive methods of salt production are used in the saltworks of Mangdang, Tibet which have been active for more than 1300 years. Farmers draw water salt wells along the Lancang River and carry it in wooden barrels to saltwater ponds in their courtyards where it concentrates before being poured into salt fields where the sun and the wind remove residual moisture leaving salt residue. The east bank of the river produces limited amounts of high quality white salt used as an ingredient in food; the west bank produces larger quantities of lower quality red salt used to process tea or feed livestock. Historically salt was an important trade good but it is no longer competitive in most markets. The saltworks are portrayed on a souvenir sheet from Macau issued on April 12, 2018.
