Cyprus Salt Stamp
"Larnaca Salt Lake" - Europa Issue of April 28, 1986

Huge salt pyramids were once found on the shores of Larnaca Salt Lake when the salt harvested here was one of Cyprus' principal exports. Production dropped and finally ended in 1986 as rising labour costs undermined the viability of the industry. The lake is now important as a protected natural area and the home to 85 species of waterbirds including the flamingos pictured on one of Cyprus' 1986 Europa stamps.
