Cape Verde
Pedra de Lume is a village on Cape Verde's island of Sal. Salt deposits are found in the crater of an extinct volcano were water seeps up from beneath the earth rather than from the sea. The village was founded by Manuel António Martins, who started harvesting the salt ponds in 1796. Salt production prospered through the first part of the 1800's, but went into decline after 1887 when Brazil banned imported salt. In 1921 a French company, Salins du Cap Vert, built an aerial tramway to revive the salt industry. Today limited salt production continues to supply specialized markets.
