Algeria
Halite, otherwise known as "rock salt" is one of four minerals depicted on a series of Algerian stamps issued on April 21, 1983. In 2020 Algeria produced 95 100 metric tonnes of salt, .03 percent of global production. About 2% of this comes from the Biskra salt mine, one of the largest open pit salt mines in Africa. Operated by CHLORAL, the first private Algerian mining group, it produces de-icing salt for export, industrial salt used in chemistry, oil drilling, water treatment, cosmetics, the pharmaceutical industry and agriculture, as well as food-grade salt for agri-food preparations, natural food preservation and kitchen salt.
