Introduction
In 1974, Erno Rubik, a Hungarian professor of Design and Architecture, invented a puzzle that despite its simple appearance, would intrigue millions of people and earn him a fortune in the decades that followed. An international craze followed the commercial distribution of the "Rubik's Cube" and it received its first philatelic recognition from his native land in 1982 when the Hungarian Post Office issued a 1982 commemorative celebrating the First Rubik's Cube Championship, held in Budapest. Although the fad passed, sales of the puzzle continued with waves of popularity that rose to a new peak during the COVID pandemic. Rubic's Cube was acquired by the Canadian toy manufacturer Spin Master in 2021. In 2022 it was reported that 5.75 million units of the official Rubik's Cube were sold globally. The continuing popularity of the puzzle around the world is evident by its appearance on many more stamps issued since that first Hungarian issue of 1982.
