S.S. Tivives
SS Tivives was a United Fruit Company delux passenger and fruit cargo ship with eight refrigerated compartments launched August 1, 1911. Tivives along with sister ships Carrillo and Sixaola began service on January 6, 1912 between New York and Limon, Costa Rica by way of Jamaica and Panama. Because she was foreign built, the ship was British flagged until the outbreak of war in Europe when such ships, owned by American companies, were permitted to change flags to the United States. After the American entry into World War I the ship was commissioned by the United States Navy as the USS Tivives. Tivives resumed service with the United Fruit Company until World War II. While operating as a War Shipping Administration vessel with United Fruit Company as agent the ship was sunk off the Algerian coast, on October 21, 1943, by German aircraft.
