S.S. Gulfport Although it was primarily used for coastal shipping in Eastern Canada, the SS Gulfport is included here because it did see winter service in the south as is evident from the Puerto Barrios paquebot cover posted here. Completed in 1943 by Lubecker Flender-Werke, Lubeck, as Hansa, and captured in 1945, the ship was renamed Empire Gatehouse before being awarded to Canada as war reparations, sold to Clarke Steamship Lines and being named the Gulfport. Although being largely dedicated to coastal services in Canada, she was equipped with refrigerated storage and spent several winter seasons trading in the south under Capt Alphonse Begin. In 1964 she was sold and sailed under Liberian registration as the Stefani. She was sold three more times sailing as Agia Marina, Bright and Khalda before having its class withdrawn for defects in 1973, being arrested in Masawa in 1974, being sold in damaged condition in 1977 and being broken up in Masawa in 1982.
